  • Is Brydan a counselling or clinical psychologist?
In Australia, registered psychologists are similar to general practitioner (GP) doctors in that they are trained to provide a broad range of services, encompassing counselling, assessment, diagnosis, and therapeutic treatment. Like GPs, who handle a diverse set of health issues and may perform basic procedures, psychologists work with various mental health concerns, using their wide-ranging knowledge and skills to support clients with anxiety, depression, stress, relationship issues, and more. This flexibility allows them to meet the unique needs of each client without being confined to one narrow specialty. Just as GPs may have special interests—such as sexual health, travel immunisations, mental health, or men's health—registered psychologists in Australia can also have specific areas of focus within their generalist practice. For instance, Brydan, as a qualified and registered psychologist, is trained to provide counselling treatments in various therapeutic styles like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), mindfulness, and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). He is also experienced in conducting clinical assessments, providing diagnoses, and creating reports according to his expertise and client needs. Brydan’s interests are broad and client-focused, reflecting a generalist’s adaptability and holistic approach. His global practice encompasses a focus on support for expats, gender and sexuality diverse clients, individuals dealing with sexual health, trauma, and minority stress. Given his background in criminology, Brydan is also drawn to working with victims, offenders, and individuals associated with the criminal justice system, national security, defense, and public sector roles. This blend of interests showcases the flexibility of a generalist psychologist, capable of addressing a range of issues while developing deeper expertise in select areas. In the Australian psychology field, those wishing to specialise further can obtain endorsements in areas like clinical, forensic, health, neuropsychology, or educational psychology. This is akin to how GPs may decide to specialise formally in areas such as psychiatry (mental health), oncology (cancer), pediatrics (children’s health), or surgery. These endorsements require additional postgraduate qualifications and supervised practice, equipping psychologists with advanced skills in their chosen specialty. Generalist psychologists do not need endorsement to work in these fields, but do need endorsement to call themselves 'clinical' or 'forensic' psychologists, etc., as these are protected titles and have different legal implications. In contrast, some countries categorise psychologists more rigidly, dividing them into specific types (e.g., clinical or counseling psychologists) with limited recognition of generalist psychologists’ diverse skills. This system can sometimes overlook the comprehensive training that generalists undergo, which allows them to handle both counselling and clinical work and offer broad-based support, much like a GP would in the healthcare field. Further, generalist psychologists in Australia, may be referred to as clinical or counselling psychologists in other countries, based on the type of work they actually do, not their qualifications and formal endorsements.
